our~kid~tech© (r · kid · tek)

n. a young scholar on one's own neighborhood.

v. to lead, guide and inspire adults/parents.

adj. describes a project or activity that includes the voice an opinions of a neighborhood "our~kid~tech".

The our~kid~tech program was inspired by a South El Monte High School 11th grader.  Several months ago, MDLT participated in the first Environmental Career Fair at South El Monte High School.  During a MDLT staff presentation, an 11th grade student spoke up and shared that he was in the Shirpser School 3rd grade class that wrote letters to the El Monte City Council to have an empty, blighted lot transformed to a much needed neighborhood park.  It is clear that when children are involved in the development of planned neighborhood projects and are given a platform to express their ideas and opinions - they do!

MDLT rolled-out our~kid~tech program during the Los Angeles River & Aliso Creek Confluence Project in Reseda.  We held three our~kid~tech workshops and produced a “kid-driven” design for the proposed project. One component of the project is working with charter schools, homeschool instructors as well as other educational institutions.  The program’s goal is to teach children about sustainability, conservation and local environmental issues that affect their neighborhood.  They’ll learn how to make their own home and neighborhood block green and clean.  Children who complete the program will be certified as an “our~kid~tech” of their neighborhood block.

El Paletero©

Coming in February 2010!

El Paletero is an action figure disguised to sell paletas (frozen fruit bars) in neighborhoods and parks.  His real mission is to deliver green messages to his customers and recruit a youth brigade to combat the evils of polluters, etc…
